Atlanta (USA) / Managua (dpa) - The Nicaraguan poet and priest Ernesto Cardenal today described as "monstrous" the beatification of Pope John Paul II, scheduled for Sunday, for being "protector" of the Mexican priest Marcial Maciel, who was accused of sexual abuse.
The author of "Cosmic Canticle" featured an interview with CNN in Atlanta, during a visit by the U.S. to present his latest book "The Origin of Species and Other Poems."
"The truth is that he (John Paul II) was protective of Mexican priest Marcial Maciel, who led a life of a monstrous dishonesty. Which is now beatified and then canonized also seems to me monstrous, "said Cardinal.
Maciel, the late founder of the Legionaries of Christ, was removed from the priesthood in 2006 after Pope Benedict XVI to punish him for sexual abuse against seminarians.
Cardinal, 86, recalled the moment when John Paul II publicly reprimanded him at the airport in Managua, the first visit to Nicaragua in 1983, because the poet held the post of Minister of Culture Sandinista government.
"He did not want priests in positions of government, but the Nicaraguan bishops publicly we had given permission for us to have those charges, though I could not argue with the Pope in public, "he said.
On the Theology of Liberation, which flourished in Latin America in the 80, Cardinal said" should have been called Theology of Revolution "for his advocacy of the poor and social justice.
" But the bishops of that time were afraid of that word and used a less strong "because" the Vatican is against any revolution " said the poet laureate.
John Paul II will be beatified in a day of festivities that begin Saturday morning in Rome, when his remains will be taken the Vatican grotto of St. Peter's Basilica, where the chapel of rest in San Sebastian, near La Piedad de Miguel Ángel.
